Make Do and Mend on Holiday…

We’ve just got back from a week away in sunny (and it was, kind of. Or at least, not rainy, so a big Hurrah!) Cornwall.
It was fabulous. There was no wi-fi, which meant I was forced to kick back and spend the evenings reading, and going to bed at a sensible time, rather than spending far too much time on social media!

We visited the fabulous Lost Gardens of Heligan, The Eden Project, and a couple of National Trust properties, as well as the beach, and a wonderful time was had by all.

I took some snaps of some innovative Upcycling and Make Do and Mend style goings on….

First up, at Heligan they had a whole Wild Week, and the kids (and grown ups) got to make crowns from natural materials (as sported by me..) and have a go at some good full-fashioned games: catapults made from tree branches and old bike inner tubes; pea shooters made from bamboo and fired at old tin can targets; and finally ‘winging a stick at a pile of stones’, which was very popular with our two Smalls….

And I took some pics of all the old gardening stuff and some wise gardening words, just because I love pics of old stuff

At Eden, perhaps unsurprisingly, there were some good examples of upcycling in action

Eden collageThis was the WEE man sculpture at Eden-made from 3.3 tonnes of electrical and electronic equipment-which is apparently the amount we will all use and discard in our lifetimes. This was a pretty sobering thought

And another thought provoking display was the Ecover Bee Clever Sculpture by Ptolemy, made at Glastonbury last year from Ecover bottles, to draw attention to the importance of using sustainable materials

At Lanhydrock, a National Trust property, the kitchens were fairly impressive, and again, just because I love old kitchen stuff, I took some pics

and they had a real life HayBox too! (We bought a modern version of a haybox in the guise of a Wonderbag for the Great Energy Race)

I hope you will indulge me sharing some holiday snaps with you-they are kind of on topic..!

    • Would definitely recommend it Karen-even if it is just to marvel at the balls and vision it must have taken to even have the idea, let alone follow through on it!
