I took the boys out to our local Pick Your Own the other day, and we spent a very pleasurable hour or two picking strawberries, eating strawberries, and getting stung by nettles (that bit was slightly less pleasurable)
I had kind of forgotten about the joys of Pick Your Own. We haven’t been for years. We are very lucky in that my parents have an allotment, so we get to do a fair amount of picking there, but I felt the need to go and explore.
It was great fun. The farm was a little ramshackle, and the nettles and thorns were quite rampant, but it was good wholesome fun.
The boys got to explore and hunt for the fattest, reddest and juiciest strawberries. The sun shone, and it was all pretty idyllic.
I would thoroughly recommend it if you have one near you. We have a few sorry strawberry plants in our back garden, and nothing can beat Growing Your Own, but when you need more than 2 strawberries at any one time, then Pick Your Own is a pretty good option. I’m sure it wasn’t actually any cheaper than buying them on BOGOF in the supermarket, but it felt much better.
It felt like Summer 🙂
We got some rhubarb too, and will be back for gooseberries and raspberries in due course.
Stay tuned for some strawberry and some rhubarb recipes…
❤ it when kids pick their own fruit for themselves it encourages them to eat it problem is there's never enough strawberries … must try "pick your own" when grandkids old enough.
My gooseberry crop is a bumper one this year :o)
It was great fun Vivienne. Will definitely be going back.
Gooseberry fool all round..?!
