Having made and decorated The Great Make Do and Mend Egg Box Christmas Tree, we needed a suitable adornment for the top.
The eagle eyed among you may have spotted the star sat proudly atop our ‘lovely’ tree.
There is, as ever, a little story to go with it…
My mother in law came round the other day, having been to visit her 88 year old Aunt, proudly bearing this
It is, as you can see, a star, made by same 88 year old Aunt.
Can you guess what it’s made from..?
That’s right-pegs!
And as luck would have it, my mother in law has a stash of wooden pegs that she no longer uses, so she very kindly gave me some, so I could make some of our own.
It’s really easy. You just dismantle the pegs by carefully removing the spring. Then turn the bits round so that are back to back, and glue. I am told that Auntie Doris used UHU (other super glue type glues are available..) but I went with my trusty favourite, the glue gun.
DON’T FORGET (as I did. Twice) to sandwich some ribbon between one of your spokes of star if you want to be able to hang it up…
Then when you have five all done, you glue then together in a star shape.
Done!
Auntie Doris painted hers gold, but I have left ours ‘au naturel’.

I love that we think we invented ‘upcycling’ but as ever, the older and wiser generation have done it all before!!
Now, I just need to think of a way to upcycle these…

That’s brilliant! I have lots of pegs that have freed themselves from the shackles of their springs already… maybe they want to be stars! As for the springs, I say make tiny mousetraps 😀

Brilliant, well done Auntie Doris! I think this is spot for your ethos and ties in with your tree brilliantly, I’ve got some small pegs (the kind you buy to go on cards and use in other crafts), so I could nd you with lots of different sizes. You may have started a trend here, :O)
